The first thing that might leave an impression in regard to this project from Sweden is the overall density in the expression of the music. There is little doubt about the direction or confusion about where things might move towards. How all things hings together, what the underlying ideas behind Sahrana are and many more stuff is being touched upon in the following lines... in this really, really delayed interview (sorry for that)

Sahrana would be Serbo-Croatian for burial. What made you pick this name?
Well, my girlfriend is serbian... So picking a serbian word for it just came naturally.

Judging from the entry at the Metal Archives, the band has seen quite a lot of releases in 2015 and so far none in 2016. How did this happen and does the music from last year go back even further?
I wouldn't necessarily say that two releases in 2015 is quite a lot, but yeah... 2015 was the year that I started making music as Sahrana, and I was fortunate enough to have two great labels, Brigades Of Anger & Beläten, that wanted to make tape releases with me. 2016 has been packed with recording sessions - I have two releases scheduled this fall. One is a C40 on Cloister Recordings out of Denver, Colorado in the U.S. And the other is a split cassette release with Gnaw Their Tongues on The Tide Of The End.

What had been the starting point for the band? Has it been an idea, a sound or even a some kind of musical concept?
First of all, let's clear this out. I am not a band. It's just me. And perhaps the starting point for this project was that I was a bit fed up with having to conform to other people when playing in bands. The thought of being in total creative control really appealed to me, after being in various bands for almost 25 years... I started out making noise. But as I slowly realized that I was able to play all the instruments I needed to play when making black metal I just went with it.

From your bandcamp entry: "experimenting in harsh landscapes". Is this something you try to imagine visually as well? How do you approach such a concept.
I don't work much with visuals. But when I try - I tend to go in the same direction as I do with the music. Which is, yes, harsh and landscapy I guess... I have been experimenting some with video making as well. And I am gonna do more, but right now - the recording of music is the main objective... And also - when releasing tapes, the labels often has a graphic profile they want to work alongside - wich is always fine with me. Their thought of how my music should be portrayed on paper and how my music sounds always tends to marry well!

How would you describe the core aspects of your music?
There is a lot of anxiety and deep darkness in there. But also a lot of light and a strong will to experiment. So I guess that those elements is the core. Totally unclear answer, I know. But not all things are clear all the time.

Why black metal? What makes this genre special to you?
I have been interested in black metal for years. Alltho never the traditional black metal. I have very little love for traditional Norwegian BM for example. Black metal is performed best by people that doesn't have a lot of hate in their lives I'm pretty sure. As with all music.

What would be your opinion on today's scene(s)?
There is so many good bands and solo projects around making noisy and atmospheric BM that I get dizzy every time I try to find and listen to new bands. So basically what I do is that I record my own music and keep that as the music I listen the most to. But there is a couple musicians that shine brighter than others. And hopefully - who they are shines thru when listening to my stuff. Because they are my source of inspiration. And, even if I try really hard, I will never be able to reinvent the wheel...

Why does the logo appear in this peculiar fashion? What is it that runes add to your concept of music?
Disregard from this logo. It was something i did a long time ago. There is no meaning in it. I do not like runes. It could easily be a plain Times New Roman text.

Take us through your releases. How would you describe each of these in a few words?
Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun was my first physical release - so obviously this one has a great emotional value to me. Those two songs are the first two experiments in black metal for me. It was exciting as hell. The self titled release on Beläten was very exciting for me. I was contacted by Thomas (the man behind Beläten and Trepaneringsritualen) to do a KRYPTA release. I worked on that for a couple of months, but none of us was really happy with the outcome. So I told him that I had started to record as Sahrana- and he was all about it. I was under a lot of creative pressure recording those songs - since I respect him a lot as a musician and for the stuff that he has put out thru the years.

Journey to the Far Side of the Sun is actually an interesting title for a release. What had been the inspirations for it?
There is this fantastic old sci if move with the same name. That I have not seen, actually. But the name really spoke to me. And after the recording sessions was done that release just had to go under that name.

The music follows a distinct pattern and conception throughout the releases. Why is that so? Why do you keep the conceptual boundaries such tight?
I would not exactly agree with you on that... I feel that the music I make twist and turn in a lot of different directions... altho - of course there are conceptual boundaries - and they are the conceptual boundaries that make sahrana sahrana...

Is this constant bombardment and the lack of clear counterpoints not an unnecessary limitation? Might it not prove to be difficult to keep up the tension and attention of the listener?
again - not sure if i really can agree with you - almost to the point that i am not sure if you have listened to the whole work...? I would say that there is a lot of opening uppers through out the most of my work - almost in a post-rock maner... i don'y know - maybe its just me hearing it tho...

Do you feel that you have found the concept or style with Sahrana already or where do you think that it might be necessary to push things a bit further still?
the main frame is set - for sure! but also, a lot has happened since the two previous physical releases... the cloister cassette is even harsher and darker than the belated release, where as the tide of the end release is i bit more sunny - but still - not...

As it is difficult to make out something of the vocals, which is due their pitch and distortion, why don't you elaborate a bit about their share in the music. What do the lyrics deal with?
the pitch and distortion on the vocals is truly elaborated... I always try to use the voice as an instrument - instead just a tool to say stuff. if you need something said - go to the streets and talk to people, or write a fucking book... there are little or no lyrics at all written on the sahrana songs - just random words that come to me when i record them...

How does "I'm Alright With It" fit into this? Was it an experiment?
that song is actually a part of my main frame you know... this is just one of the counterparts that you previously stated that i lack - so there you go...

Some words about the recording of the music. Is this something done by you alone? How long does it take you to get your music recorded?
everything i record for sahrana i record all by myself. i used a couple of different drummers in the beginning - but then i learned how to myself. the sessions are often shrouded in mystery - even to myself. seriously - i could be in the studio all night and get super surprised the next morning when i listen to it...

Leaving the digital downloads aside for a moment, only the tapes have been preferred by you so far. What makes this format somehow special to you?
its cheap. and it gives you a lot of room to work around it. i always felt that when you buy music you should get something to come with it. i am not against any other physical formats - its just that people who releases experimental music often don't make a shitload of money of it - so doing vinyls doesn't really pay off. but also - cassettes are the ones that sound the best when played back...

Has the band hit the stage already? How have possible experiences been?
i've done a couple shows... but there will be no more... i will focus on recording and releasing tapes with this project from now on.

What would be the future plans for the band?
write, record, release, repeat.
